A recent change in national regulations is expected to significantly benefit the electric vehicle (EV) sector by streamlining the process of installing charging infrastructure.
From the end of last month, homeowners no longer need formal permission to fit a private EV charging point on their property. This move aims to remove bureaucratic barriers and encourage more people to adopt electric vehicles. Businesses have also been included in the update, with firms now able to set up public chargers on their premises without navigating a lengthy approval process.
Industry figures have welcomed the reform. One executive from a leading charging company described it as a “major advancement” in supporting the country’s shift towards cleaner transport. He highlighted that the simplified rules give households greater flexibility and allow installations that better match individual property designs.
In just the past month, more than 1,300 new chargers have been added, contributing to the government’s long-term ambition of deploying hundreds of thousands of charge points nationwide by 2030.
A government minister responsible for roads and transport policy praised the move, calling it a vital step in reducing administrative hurdles. She emphasised that the goal is to make electric driving more accessible and convenient, with fewer delays in charger rollout.
The government has already committed billions in funding to accelerate the adoption of EVs, support domestic manufacturers, and attract international investment — all part of a wider strategy to modernise transport and promote greener technologies.
As the demand for electric vehicles continues to rise, these regulatory changes could prove essential in laying the groundwork for a more sustainable and accessible transport network across the country.
