Cold weather and early starts can make everyday driving feel like a chore. When frost builds up overnight, it’s tempting to warm your car up with the engine running while you get ready inside. However, some common de-icing habits can land you in trouble — legally, environmentally, and even with your insurance.

Don’t Leave Your Engine Running Unattended

It might seem sensible to start the car and nip back inside while it defrosts, but this is actually against the rules of the road. The Highway Code says you must not leave a parked vehicle with the engine running and unattended. Aside from the legal side, leaving your car running contributes to air pollution and makes it a target for opportunistic thieves, who could take the car in minutes if the keys are left inside.

Think About the Environment and Your Health

Idling engines produce gases such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide. These pollutants contribute to climate change and can trigger breathing issues and other health problems. The car will warm up reasonably quickly once moving, so there’s little need for extended idling.

Visibility and Safety Come First

Before you set off, it’s your responsibility to make sure all windows, mirrors and lights are clear of frost and snow. Simply scraping a small viewing area, sometimes called a “porthole”, might get you moving faster but it’s unsafe and could result in a fine if you’re stopped by the police.

Better Ways to Handle Frost

Here are practical and responsible ways to deal with frost:

  • Keep a proper ice scraper and de-icing spray to hand — they’re inexpensive and far more effective than improvised tools.

  • Use a windscreen cover overnight to stop frost building up in the first place.

  • Leave a little extra time in the morning to defrost the car fully — waking up five minutes earlier makes a big difference.

  • When conditions are severe, think about whether your journey is necessary or if alternatives like public transport might be safer.

Looking After Yourself and Your Car

Taking a few moments to de-ice your car properly means you stay within the law, reduce your environmental impact and protect your vehicle from theft. These small changes to your winter routine can lead to a smoother and safer start to the day.

Stay safe on the roads this winter, and take a little time to do it right.
