Getting your motorcycle through its MOT first time is always the goal, but many riders are caught out by simple issues that could have been avoided. Following on from our guide to motorcycle MOTs, this article looks at the most common reasons bikes fail and what you can do to prevent it.
At Segensworth Automobiles, we see the same problems crop up time and time again. The good news is that most of them are quick, inexpensive fixes if you catch them early.
The Most Common Motorcycle MOT Failures
1. Faulty Lights and Indicators
This is by far one of the biggest reasons for failure. Bulbs can blow without you noticing, and indicators may flash too quickly or not at all.
What to do:
Before your MOT, turn on your ignition and check every light, including brake lights and number plate illumination.
2. Worn or Damaged Tyres
Motorcycle tyres must have at least 1mm tread depth across three quarters of the tyre, and they must be free from cuts, cracks, or bulges.
What to do:
Inspect your tyres regularly and replace them if they are close to the legal limit or showing signs of damage.
3. Brake Issues
Brakes must work efficiently and evenly. Problems such as worn pads, discs, or fluid leaks can all lead to failure.
What to do:
Listen for unusual noises when braking and check for reduced stopping power. If in doubt, have them inspected before your test.
4. Chain and Sprocket Wear
A loose, dry, or excessively worn chain is a common fail point, especially for regularly used bikes.
What to do:
Keep your chain clean, lubricated, and correctly tensioned. If there is visible wear, it may be time for a replacement.
5. Suspension Problems
Leaking fork seals or worn suspension components can affect handling and lead to an MOT failure.
What to do:
Check for oil leaks around the forks and ensure the bike feels stable when riding.
6. Exhaust Issues
Excessive noise or leaks in the exhaust system can result in a fail.
What to do:
Make sure your exhaust is securely fitted and not louder than it should be. Aftermarket exhausts must still meet legal noise limits.
7. Registration Plate Problems
Your number plate must be the correct size, format, and clearly visible.
What to do:
Ensure your plate is clean, properly mounted, and not obscured or incorrectly spaced.
Simple Pre-MOT Checklist
To improve your chances of passing first time, run through this quick checklist:
- All lights working correctly
- Tyres above legal tread depth
- Chain clean and properly tensioned
- Brakes responsive with no unusual noises
- No fluid leaks
- Number plate clean and compliant
Spending just 10 to 15 minutes checking your bike could save you the time and cost of a retest.
What Happens If Your Bike Fails?
If your motorcycle does fail its MOT, do not panic. You will receive a VT30 certificate outlining the reasons for failure.
In most cases:
- Minor issues can be repaired quickly
- You may qualify for a free or reduced cost retest if repairs are done promptly
- Your bike can still be ridden to a repair appointment if it is safe and roadworthy
Our team at Segensworth Automobiles will always explain any issues clearly and help you get back on the road as quickly as possible.
